Marine Pollution
[ send me this essay ]
A 3 page paper discussing the ocean’s reaction to polluting influences. Unless shocked beyond recovery, any body of water has the power to at partially clean itself, given enough time and enough physical space. The great witness to that ability is that we have not been able to “kill” any vast areas, in spite of apparent attempts to do so. The paper describes how inland farming pollution adversely affected the southern North Carolina coast following Hurricane Fran in 1996. Shellfish populations and commercial fishing had nearly recovered by the time Hurricane Floyd caused extensive inland flooding in 1999. The effects on the ocean have already been seen as floodwaters have moved through rivers into the ocean; how long recovery will take from this disaster is unknown. Bibliography lists 1 source.
